Why Storage servers
What storage servers are good at.
22 TB enterprise drives7,200 rpm enterprise-class hard drives in 4, 12 or 24 bays, exposed directly to the OS for ZFS or mdadm.
NVMe for OS and cacheTwo NVMe drives per server for the system, ZFS special or cache devices, or a hot tier.
Line-rate fill and restoreAt 10 Gbps, 88 TB moves in under a day. Restores are limited by your disks, not by a traffic quota.
ECC memoryECC DDR5 from 64 to 256 GB: what ZFS and object storage want under their caches.
Usable capacity
Storage server capacity: raw, and usable.
Decimal terabytes before filesystem overhead, for the most common layouts. You choose the layout in software.
| Server | Drives | Raw | RAID 10 | RAID 6 (one group) | RAID 60 / RAIDZ2 groups | Recommended | Per usable TB |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Storage 88 TB AMD EPYC 4244P · 64 GB DDR5 ECC | 4 × 22 TB | 88 TB | 44 TB | 44 TB | — | RAID 10 or RAID 6 | $3.39/TB |
| Storage 264 TB AMD EPYC 4464P · 128 GB DDR5 ECC | 12 × 22 TB | 264 TB | 132 TB | 220 TB | 176 TB | RAID 6 or 2 × RAIDZ2 (6 drives) | $2.66/TB |
| Storage 528 TB AMD EPYC 9254 · 256 GB DDR5 ECC | 24 × 22 TB | 528 TB | 264 TB | 484 TB | 440 TB | 2 × RAID 6 / RAIDZ2 (12 drives) | $2.27/TB |
Per usable TB uses RAID 6 on the 88 TB server and RAID 60 / RAIDZ2 groups on the others. Drives are 22 TB enterprise-class HDDs on an HBA; both NVMe drives are extra, for the OS and caching.

FAQ
Storage servers: questions, answered.
Still have a question? Customers with an active server get answers from engineers in a support ticket.
Support ticketsWhat happens when a drive fails?
Open a ticket with the drive’s serial number (smartctl shows it) and we replace it, usually within 4 hours for standard parts under our SLA. Your RAID or ZFS pool then rebuilds onto the new drive.
Which RAID layout should I use?
For 4 drives, RAID 10 rebuilds fastest; RAID 6 gives the same capacity with two-drive fault tolerance. On 12 and 24 drives, RAID 6 or RAIDZ2 groups are the usual balance. The table on this page shows usable capacity per layout. RAID 5 with 22 TB drives is risky because rebuilds take a long time.
Can I encrypt my data at rest?
Yes, with LUKS or ZFS native encryption. You hold the keys; unlock at boot through the IPMI / KVM console or remotely with dropbear in the initramfs.
Can I run S3-compatible object storage?
Yes. Garage, SeaweedFS and MinIO all run on a single storage server; for a multi-server cluster, Ceph RGW is a common choice. Storage and backup setups
